Frequently Asked Questions
Common Questions
What happens at my first visit?
Your first visit includes a comprehensive orthodontic examination by Dr. Call, digital X-rays if needed, and a full discussion of your treatment options, timeline, and costs. There is no pressure to commit — we want you to feel fully informed before making any decisions. The consultation is completely free.
What's the difference between a dentist and an orthodontist?
Orthodontists are dental specialists who have completed an additional 2–3 years of advanced residency training after dental school, focusing exclusively on tooth movement, jaw alignment, and facial development. Dr. Call is both a licensed dentist (DDS) and a certified orthodontic specialist (MS) — trained at UCLA, one of the nation's most competitive programs.
At what age should my child first see an orthodontist?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first visit by age 7. This doesn't mean treatment will start immediately — it allows Dr. Call to monitor jaw development and identify any early concerns before they become complex. Many children are simply monitored until the optimal time for treatment, which is often around ages 11–13.
How long does orthodontic treatment take?
Most orthodontic treatment ranges from 18 to 24 months, depending on the complexity of the case and patient compliance. Some cases require less time, while complex cases may take longer. Dr. Call will give you a personalized estimate at your consultation after thoroughly evaluating your teeth, bite, and jaw.
Will insurance cover my treatment?
Many dental insurance plans include orthodontic coverage, often covering a portion of treatment up to a lifetime maximum (typically $1,000–$2,000). Our team will verify your insurance benefits before your consultation and explain exactly what is and isn't covered so there are no surprises. We accept most major dental PPO plans.
Can I get orthodontic treatment if I've had braces before?
Absolutely. Teeth can shift over time, especially if retainers weren't worn consistently after prior treatment. Retreatment is very common, and these cases often require less time than original treatment. Dr. Call has extensive experience with adult retreatment and will assess your current situation to recommend the best approach.
What is airway orthodontics and do I need it?
Airway orthodontics goes beyond straightening teeth — it considers how the jaw, palate, and tooth position affect breathing, particularly during sleep. Some patients with narrow palates, underdeveloped jaws, or certain bite patterns may benefit from treatment that improves both their smile and their airway function. Dr. Call will evaluate this as part of your comprehensive examination if relevant to your case.
